ESSEX SEAFOOD GUTTED BY FIRE

So very sorry to read this and hoping so much to see Howie rebuild

ESSEX (CBS) – A fire that tore through a popular seafood restaurant in Essex, just hours after a busy day of takeout orders, was caused by a gas heater left running overnight, investigators said.

Flames broke out in the kitchen at Essex Seafood on Eastern Avenue around 11 p.m. Sunday. No one was hurt, but it took firefighters about an hour to get the fire under control.

“The fire originated over the counter area where there was a 15-20 year old ceiling mounted gas heater. The heater had been left running overnight after the restaurant closed,” the State Fire Marshal’s Office said in a statement Monday.

Damaged is estimated at $250,000. The building inspector said it is “probably a total loss.”

Piping Plover Chronicles – new series – currently following three different PiPl families at three different locations. This is great for comparing and contrasting. Our PiPls are behind, by several weeks. Not because they arrived any later, but because of dog and human disturbance in the nesting area, which is due to a lack of signage. We are working to correct this oversight.

A behavior shared by all Plovers is called “foot-trembling.” Also called “foot-tapping” and “foot-pattering,” the vibration caused by the PiPl shaking its foot brings worms and other prey closer to the surface of the sand.

Please send in your wildlife stories, restaurants and businesses you think we ought to know more about and help support, fun recipes, and anything else you would like to share about.

Thank you for watching! Happy Mom’s Day <3

GARDENING FRIENDS – ITS TOO EARLY TO PLANT YOUR WARM WEATHER SEEDLINGS OUT DOORS

Each year customers ask nursery growers for plants earlier and earlier in the season. Yes, purchase if you are worried about stock, but do not plant outdoors until after May 31st. Keep in a protected location and gradually acclimate to outdoor temps (hardening off*).  In the old days, after Memorial Day was the standard rule of thumb for New Englanders. We’ve gotten away from that. It’s risky business to plant your annual flowers, eggplant, peppers, tomatoes, and herbs such as basil oregano outdoors too early, especially this year when we may have a snowfall this coming Mother’s Day weekend.

The following is a handy chart specifically for Cape Ann from the Farmer’s Almanac, although I would modify, ignore the frost date, and plant my warm weather seedlings closer to the June1st – June 5th Moon dates. The first date in each box is based on frost dates, the second line is based on Moon dates. Follow the Moon dates, especially this year when we are having an unusually cool spring.

*What does hardening off your seedlings mean? Think of it this way – seedlings are weaklings. They have delicate slender stalks that are easily blown over and their tiny tender leaves will freeze in a heart beat or shrivel in the penetrating sun of May. Seedlings need time to toughen up before planting out in the garden.

Hardening off is the practice of gradually exposing the seedlings to outdoor conditions. Place plants in a protected area for a few hours a day, out of the way of wind and direct sun. On cold nights bring indoors to a garage, shed, or back inside. Gradually increase the plant’s time spent outdoors. Keep moist and don’t let the soil dry out. In a week or so you will see the stalk and leaves have visibly thickened. House plants and herbs that have been grown indoors all winter (essentially babied) will also benefit from hardening off if you are planning to move outdoors.

BUY MASSACHUSETTS SEAFOOD! MESSAGE FROM MASSACHUSETTS DIVISION OF MARINE FISHERIES – Supporting and Preserving our Seafood Industry during Covid-19

An informative and nuanced message from DMF’s Dan McKiernan about the status of the seafood industry and dynamic response efforts during the Spring of 2020.

CONGRATULATIONS – THE FAMILY PORCH RAIT PROJECT TO BENEFIT THE OPEN DOOR RAISES $21,000.00!!!

Thank you so much for your interest in The Family Porch-Rait Project!!
This whole fundraiser could not have gone any more spectacularly. We initially thought we’d get a little interest and raise a little money. Instead, we got tremendous interest and we raised A LOT of money – as of right now, over $18,000 is going to help provide much needed food to members of our community in The Open Door service area. This amazing organization has seen a massive spike in need because of the Covid-19 crisis and the subsequent job losses and layoffs and, with your help, has risen to meet that need.

Unfortunately, all that success means that we’ve reached absolute saturation point and can no longer accept any more requests. By the time we’re finished with our existing requests and schedule, we will have photographed nearly 200 families. We know this is disappointing, but we have to draw this fundraiser to a close.

While we can’t accommodate a photo session, the need by The Open Door remains extreme and on-going. If you’d like to donate anyway, please know that your contribution will go directly towards relieving food insecurity to, literally, your neighbors, friends and relatives. Please consider making a donation of any size to help this effort. DONATE HERE

Thank you, and again we regret the disappointment, but deeply appreciate the amazing community support!

Best

THE BEAUTIFUL MARKET RESTAURANT IN ANNISQUAM CLOSES ITS DOORS FOR GOOD

Wishing Amelia and Nico all the best in their next adventure. Thank you for a decade of wonderful nights out at your magical cove-side restaurant.

Amelia and Nico write,

“After a decade, we decided to close our beloved Market Restaurant. Although this coincides with the closing of many restaurants due to the pandemic, this was a decision we made some time ago. Our priority right nw is to create a lifestyle more conducive to raising a family.

…We want to thank our Annisquam and Gloucester communities for welcoming us to the neighborhood and embracing us. Thank you for believing in us and letting us take over the The Market. Thank you for the vases of flowers from your garden, bundles of herbs, plots of land to plant vegetable, paintings, letters of support and of course your patronage over the years.

And to all our customers, we couldn’t have returned year after year without your willingness to visit us on a tiny peninsula on a small (almost ) island in a rickety building hanging over the ocean. We are humbled by your support and love.

Thank you all.

Love,

Ameilia and Nico”

Note – Amelia and Nico are cooking at Sort and Main for the time being and working out details to launch Market Catering. Gift certificates to the Market will be honored at Short and Main

BEYOND FABULOUS – ALLIE’S BEACH STREET CAFE IS OPEN FOR TAKEOUT!

A quiet dinner for two – with no Charlotte and Alex for dinner, we decided to give Allie’s Beach Street Cafe’s take out a whirl. Along with several other fine Cape Ann restaurants, it is now at the top of our list. So nourishing and so delicious, country French cooking is pure comfort food, especially welcome after a cold damp drizzly day.

Tom had the baked haddock, with potatoes and green beans, all cooked to perfection and he LOVED that. I had the most extraordinarily huge serving of the most delicious beef stroganoff. So huge I am having the second half for lunch. The beef was melt in your mouth tender. The mushrooms and noodles were a rich chocolate brown, full flavored with absorbing the outstanding wine/beef/creamy sauce. I am crazy about creamed spinach (I know, it’s a little weird) but creamed spinach made with fresh spinach is amazingly delicious and Allie’s is just that.

Thank you for a great dinner Glenn and Allie Varga!
