DECEMBER FULL COLD MOONRISE BETWEEN TWIN LIGHTHOUSES

Love also the Native American name Long Night’s Moon for December’s Full Moon as it is so near the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, which this year is December 21st.   Here are some additional interesting names for December’s Moon:

Abenaki – Winter Maker

Algonquin – Much White Frost on Grass

Anishnaabe – Small Spirits

Cherokee – Snow Moon

Cheyenne – When Wolves Run Together

Cree – Young Fellow Spreads the Brush

Haida – Ripe Berries

Hopi – Moon of Respect

Lakota and Sioux – When Deer Shed Their Antlers

Passamaquoddy – Frost Fish Moon

Tlingit – Unborn Seals are Getting Hair

Winnebago – Big Bear’s Moon

Zuni – Sun Has Traveled Home to Rest

From the Farmer’s Almanac – “The term Long Night’s Moon is a doubly appropriate name because the midwinter night is indeed long, and because the Moon is above the horizon for a long time. The midwinter full Moon has a high trajectory across the sky because it is opposite a low Sun.”

MOON VIEWING PARTY AT GOOD HARBOR BEACH TONIGHT!

What fun to see so many folks out tonight enjoying the Full Beaver Moon rise between the Twin Lights. Happy Moon Viewing!

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Happy Halloween on this gorgeous, balmy All Hallows’ Eve.

How different New England weather is from year to year. The photos of the full Blue Moon that a friend recently shared were taken two Halloween’s ago. I recall how cold it was when taking the photos and you can see in the images that the rooftops are dusted with snow.

Beautiful golden Blue Moon set over Gloucester Harbor. The photos were taken from East Main Street, looking towards City Hall. Blue Moons occur about every 2.5 years while the next Halloween Full Moon won’t take place for another 16 – 17 years.

Happy Halloween everyone!

FULL FROST MOON RISING BETWEEN TWIN LIGHTHOUSES

Frost Moon rising between  the Twin Lights. The Frost Moon is also known as the Beaver Moon and Mourning Moon. Oh how I wish I had my tripod with me tonight, but this image is fun anyway. I think it would make a better painting.

FRIDAY THE 13TH FULL HARVEST MOON #GLOUCESTERMA #SCHOONER

Friday the 13th full moon through the masts of the Schooner Liberty Clipper

A flock of birds flew by…

and then a butterfly flew by (not really, but doesn’t this bird look like it could be a butterfly?).

Flower Moon Over Eastern Point

Saturday night’s Full Flower Moon was beautiful, glowing pink as it was rising through a soft haze of clouds before gradually turning gold, and then white, as it rose higher in the sky.

#supermoon MARCH FULL WORM MOON RISING OVER TWIN LIGHTS ROCKPORT

Hoping to capture the Supermoon, in all its huge glory, rising between the Twin Lights last night, but the sky was pink and hazy around the horizon line. Still, I think it’s good to have a record of a rarely occurring full moon on the first day of spring.

Exquisite Frost Moon and St. Ann Steeple

Everything lined up timing-wise early morning the day after Thanksgiving. The sky was clear and bright and that too made for perfect moon-viewing. Despite the wind and bitterly cold temperature, it was beautiful to see. After watching the moon descend over St. Ann, I walked further up the harbor and found a few more moon photos.
