IF YOU LOVE THE BEATLES, AND FILMMAKING, #The BeatlesGetBack IS THE BEST!

Extraordinary, honest, splendid, intimate, immersive, eye-opening — there are not enough superlatives to describe the Beatles Get Back documentary by director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings).

Get Back has been created from 56 hours of 16mm vintage film never before seen, along with 150 hours of audio recordings. After curating 8 hours of film and audio, Director Peter Jackson meticulously cleaned and restored both with breakthrough technology that allows the viewer to see and hear the Beatles as if they were performing in your backyard. The footage was shot by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969 at Twickenham Studio and Apple Studio, originally for a television show that did not materialize, and covers the making of the album Let it Be. The television show morphed into the film of the same name, Let it Be.

You’ll be mesmerized by the intimate portraits of the four fabulously talented artists and window into their world just prior to going their separate ways. Highlights of the film include the Beatles playful song writing process, camaraderie, the serendipitous appearance of keyboardist Billy Preston, a visit to the studio from Linda’s daughter six-year-old Heather, who has lots of silly fun with Paul and bandmates and briefly takes over the studio, and roles played by producers Glyn Johns and George Martin.

It’s a dream to see the authentic everyday 1970s fashions (knee socks on Linda!), John’s padded shoulder mink coat coupled with grubby white sneakers that he wears daily, George’s sheep skin-lined flower boots; each character has their own wonderfully unique style.

The final scenes take place at Apple Studio at an unannounced live rooftop concert. The Beatles last performance together was shot by Lindsay-Hogg with no less than ten cameras on the roof, while more cameras captured footage from a roof top across the street, and several more were positioned at street level.

The Beatles Get Back is streaming in three parts on the Disney + channel.

MONARCH BUTTERFLY FILM UPDATE AND JESSE COOK’S “BEYOND BORDERS” PREMIERES TONIGHT!

I am beyond excited to share that we have been able to license the music that I dreamed about for my Monarch Butterfly documentary. This may not sound like a huge deal, but we have been working towards this for several years. The four songs were composed and arranged by world renowned guitarist Jesse Cook and they are: “You,” “Fields of Blue,” Afternoon at Saties,” and “El Cri.” My husband, Tom, introduced me to Jesse’s music, and from the moment I heard it, I knew that we would find music to score Beauty on the Wing from his repertoire of beautiful songs

Jesse Cook: Beyond Borders is his newest concert special and begins airing on WGBH tonight at 8:30pm!

Beyond Borders is Cook’s most recent album and while touring the record over a 31 day period, from Canadian coast to Canadian coast, they filmed the performances in 4k every night. “The result is an immersive musical journey that treats the audience to a sense of being on stage with the band from the opening note to its energetic finale.”

From PBS:

JESSE COOK: BEYOND BORDERS

Premieres March 2, 2019 on PBS

A Musical Journey with the Genre Bending Guitarist

JESSE COOK: BEYOND BORDERSthe latest concert special by the acoustic guitar virtuoso, was filmed over the 31 days of his coast-to-coast tour of Canada. Instead of filming just one show in one night, the cameras rolled every night, allowing Jesse to place the best version of each song into this unique concert experience. The result is an immersive musical journey that treats the audience to a sense of being on stage with the band from the opening note to its energetic finale — a Jesse Cook “Rhumba Party.” JESSE COOK: BEYOND BORDERS is part of special programming premiering on PBS stations in March 2019.

Canadian guitarist, composer and producer Jesse Cook blends rumba and flamenco with elements of jazz and world music. He is a three-time winner of Canada’s Smooth Jazz Award for Guitarist of the Year, as well as a Juno Award-winner (Canada’s version of The Grammy) in the Best Instrumental Album category for Free Fall. In 2009, he was Acoustic Guitar’s Player’s Choice Silver Winner in the Flamenco category.

JESSE COOK: BEYOND BORDERS features these performances:

    • “Beyond Borders”
    • “Tempest”
    • “Come What May”
    • “Hembra”
    • “Jumpstart”
    • “Chendy’s Caja” solo
    • “Dance of Spring”
    • “Bombay Slam”
    • “Ho Hey”
    • “Double Dutch”
    • Medley (“Bombay Diner,” “Closer to Madness,” “That’s Right,” “Baghdad”)
    • “Beneath Your Skin”

Jesse Cook, a master guitarist known for his intoxicating fusion of world music, has travelled the globe looking for sounds that resonate with him. “I like finding common ground for different music traditions, a space where music from around the world can come together,” Cook explains. “A place where modern sounds can mix with ancient timbres.”

LIVE MAVIS STAPLES and the FABULOUS RICK HOLMSTROM BAND at the Shalin Liu

Rockin steady in Rockport with Mavis Staples and her fabulously talented backup trio, the Rick Holmstrom Band.

This was a show not to be missed and according to several of the stage hands, was one of the best they’ve ever produced at the Shalin Liu. I couldn’t agree more! Rick Holmstrom on guitar, Jeff Turmes, on bass, and  Stephen Hodges on drums. Bring back Mavis and the Rick Holmstrom Band-an extraordinary group of talented musicians.

You can see Mavis, along with her father Pop Staples and siblings, the Staple Singers, come in at around one minute. The song was included in the film The Last Waltz (directed by Martin Scorsese), a documentary about The Band’s last concert.

Beautiful Music from Dwight and Nicole at the Shalin Liu!

Dwight_&_Nicole-press_high_textI think I’m in love with Dwight and Nicole, the opening duo for Mavis Staples. Their music is exquisite, and wonderfully fun, too. Here’s a link to their website: Dwight and Nicole.

My favorite of the favorites is “Wish I only Knew,” which i just downloaded from iTunes. Take a behind the scenes look at their new album, Shine On, in an interview with Steve Morse.

About Dwight and Nicole, from their website:

Dwight & Nicole, an American roots band formed by recording artists Dwight Ritcher and Nicole Nelson are set to release their sophomore LP, the aptly titled Shine On, on April 22, 2014. An inspiring mashup of folk, blues, pop, jazz, gospel and reggae, the album can’t be categorized easily, but that’s fine. “I don’t like to be categorized…because I’m changing all the time. And in every moment, I’m a little bit different. And as I am feeling things, what I want to express becomes different. And I think our fans appreciate that honesty,” says Nelson.

Recorded at Milt Reder’s Rear Window Studio in Boston, Shine On was heavily funded by Dwight & Nicole’s devoted fans via music-centric crowd-sourcing site, PledgeMusic.com. The album is a culmination of an exciting couple of years that saw Nelson appear on NBC’s hit talent show, The Voice; chart a stirring rendition of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at #24 on iTunes; and win a Boston Music Award for “Female Vocalist of The Year.” The duo’s recent momentum also landed them on Boston Globe’s “25 Most Stylish of the Year” list, found them playing major festivals and performing at storied Fenway Park. A whirlwind 20 hours in New York City to see the extraordinary Macklemore and Company perform at the Best Buy Theatre left me spellbound and so not wanting the concert to be over!

I was a guest of my daughter Liv, who is the events manger at Best Buy Theatre. How proud I am of her and the fantastic job she does! I followed her around the theatre and observed as she managed 80 plus employees including 45 security guards, and as many bartenders, waitresses, hatcheck girls, and barbacks. The Xbox event was particularly complex and she had been at the theatre since 6am that morning and wasn’t going to be leaving until 6am the following morning. I had to laugh (with admiration) because if you’ve ever met my daughter, you know she is a petite blonde, and she is managing the likes of hurly burly security guards aptly nicknamaed “House.” Most of the employees are young aspiring actors and actresses, or a bit older with families to support, and everyone was super, super sweet and fun to meet.Ryan Lewis -1 ©Kim Smith 2013jpg copy

I found Macklemore awhile back and by accident one day while googling around looking for interesting and beautiful music videos, which then led to entering their video competition for the song BomBom. Liv knows that I am a huge, huge fan of Macklemores and I was on cloud nine when she asked if I would like to attend the event. Their music and their message are beautiful and delivered with heart and humor.  The concert was fabulous and fun in every way–really simply beyond fabulous!!!

I didn’t have my interchangeable lens camera with me, as they are often times not allowed, and had to rely on my iPhone for video. I had never  shot anything longer than a Vine with my iPhone and discovered that the iPhone shoots in 1080p, which is wonderful and ideal for editing. Video coming later today!

Liv found a great little hotel in midtown, within walking distance of Penn Station and Best Buy Theatre. The following morning before heading back to Gloucester (and she to bed for some much needed rest), we walked around Bryant Park in the rain and had a late breakfast at a charming French pâtissier.  ~ Thanks to my darling daughter Liv for the wonderfully fun 20-hour New York City whirlwind!

Over the weekend and next several days, when you have a moment, please watch my newest video. I have submitted it to a video contest sponsored by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis from their debut album The Heist. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis created the beautiful “Same Love” video that I posted previously. The winner will be announced after April 8th.

Same Love Marriage

This week the Supreme Court began reviewing laws that ban same-sex marriage. Beautiful video by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, inspired by Macklemore’s two uncles.
